CpxR DNA-binding transcriptional dual regulator

Synonyms: CpxR, CpxR-phosphorylated
Summary:
The regulatory protein CpxR appears to control at least 100 operons [5]. Some of these operons are involved in cellular functions, such as "conjugative plasmid gene expression" (cpx) [25, 26], the envelope stress response system, pilus assembly, secretion, motility and chemotaxis, adherence, biofilm development, multidrug resistance and efflux [27], and the copper-responsive regulatory system [3], among others. In pathogenic bacteria it controls genes involved in invasion of host cells [28]. Sometimes, CpxR acts to modulate the action of the main activators or repressors of some promoters [27]. The strong transcription activation by CpxR appears to be carried out by stabilization and acceleration of the RNApol, but the weak activation could be due to stabilization of RNApol and the slow rate of promoter escape [29] CpxR is the response regulator in the two-component regulatory system comprised of CpxR and CpxA [30].
